Lady Barn Inspirational Speakers’ Programme – Dr Haidar Alwan-Walker
On Thursday, 21st April, we were delighted to welcome into junior assembly Dr Haidar
Alwan-Walker (Dr H), a consultant Radiologist from Wythenshawe Hospital. Dr H was here to talk to us about his upbringing in the Middle East (Iraq), in Scotland, and in England, where he trained as a Radiologist in Manchester. He used his experience, his readings of famous inspiring figures (such as Nelson Mandella), and scientifically evidenced ‘Principles and Values” (from various sources including the world renowned TED talks), to highlight to the children how the ethos of Lady Barn House School carries a lot of those principles and values, and is fundamental to their development and learning.
Dr H was very keen to explain those principles and values, which he holds dear, and which included ‘focusing’ and giving all your ‘attention’ to the tasks at school, working hard and persevering when things get tough – messages we constantly reinforce at LBHS. Principles of ‘happiness’, ’life-long Learning’, ‘curiosity’, ‘and the values of ‘kindness to others’, ‘avoiding prejudice’, and the importance of relationships and love in terms of our family, friends, colleagues and the community were all enthusiastically discussed. He brought to us so many wonderful messages, including no iPads and TV after 7-8pm, which was music to our ears! It is so refreshing to think about the important things in life, and we thank Dr H for taking the time to share his wonderful philosophy with us here at LBHS.
