Fundraising Skydive

Dear All

As you will no doubt be aware, Miss Jennings and I leapt out of a plane on Saturday morning as a fundraising event to encourage contributions to a school project. There can be no doubt that it was nerve-wracking and I had rather a ‘troubled’ night’s sleep on the Friday! Miss Jennings took it all in her stride, it has to be said.

We chose Black Knights Parachute Centre in Lancashire due to their fantastic safety record – obviously a very important consideration when putting your life in the hands of a total stranger, as you fall from a moving plane.

We awoke in Garstang on Saturday morning to the most beautiful weather and as it was so clear, we were offered an upgrade to 15,000 feet; 4,000 feet higher than the original booking of 11,000 feet, adding another 30 seconds to the 60 second free-fall enjoyed at the lower height. It should also be mentioned that you cannot skydive from higher than 15,000 feet, anywhere in Britain, as the air becomes too thin to breathe without assistance! Miss Jennings agreed to go from here and an opportunity to have it filmed was also offered which was too good to miss; you can access a brilliant video of Miss Jennings’ dive on our youtube channel accessed via the website – just choose ‘videos’ when you reach the page. There are also a number of stills viewable on our website.

This morning we showed the Infant and Junior pupils the video, which left some of them somewhat in awe. In fact at the point that Miss Jennings falls from the plane, they all gasped. You’ll be pleased to know that despite many of them saying they’d like to have a go, we let them know that they must be 16 and have the permission of a parent!!

I can confirm, which may interest those of you thinking of having a go, that it was the most thrilling experience of our lives. My only regret was that I chose not to go from 15,000 feet; a decision I regretted as soon as I left the plane!! Anyone worrying about the ‘stomach’ lurching fall need not be concerned either; you move laterally, to begin with, in the slipstream of the plane so feel nothing other than flying (even if it is at 120mph).

As you read this our justgiving page has reached a total of £1,300 but stalled a little, so if you haven’t done so already, and you are able to make a donation, we will keep the page open for a while longer! Any donation, however small, adds to the total and will all be spent on exciting resources for your children throughout the school. You can access the link here:
