Lady Barn House School

About Us

A Welcome from the Head

Lady Barn House School is among the top independent preparatory day schools and is the largest school of its type in the north of England. We have an excellent reputation locally and far beyond for the breadth and quality of the education we offer.  We are proud that our pupils achieve extraordinary things with us before moving on to a wide range of senior schools, many with scholarships. We value teaching and learning approaches that are tried and tested, but we combine these with modern, innovative and creative approaches to create a balance that we believe offers ‘the best of both’ and an ideal foundation on which to build young lives.

Founded in 1873 as a progressive co-educational day school, we continue to cater for boys and girls from three years to eleven years of age. At the school’s foundation, the well-being and happiness of the child was of paramount importance and this still remains the case today.  Over time the opportunities offered by our curriculum and co-curriculum have developed enormously, supported by an impressive range of internal and external facilities.

Through small classes, careful guidance and meticulous tracking of progress, our children gradually build confidence and knowledge. We are a community that is built on kindness, mutual respect and impeccable manners  towards one another.  This helps our pupils to become well balanced, confident, happy and well rounded young people who take great pride in their achievements and their school and for whom, on leaving, their world lies at their feet.
