Art & Design Technology
“Every child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
Art and Design is experimental by nature and therefore generally concerned with knowledge gained by doing. At Lady Barn we encourage and value a love of handwork and Art, as the joy of creativity makes for a more fulfilled and happy childhood. Children are encouraged to explore their own creativity through a variety of media and are able to produce work of a high standard right from the Early Years.
It is my aim in the Art department to provide a stimulating environment where children can develop and enjoy using their creative and imaginative skills, exploring the many different aspects of Art with confidence and enthusiasm. It is where children feel able to voice their opinions of the work of great artists, their own work and that of their peers in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
Within this dynamic department, Art and Design in the Junior School is taught for two periods a week, in a dedicated and well resourced room; the department has specialist facilities for ceramic work. In the Infant department, Art and Design is overseen by the subject leader and taught by enthusiastic class teachers who have a wide knowledge of this subject, in the more familiar and relaxed surroundings of the children’s classrooms.
Developing aesthetic awareness
The subject provides children with visual, tactile and sensory experiences enabling them to observe and develop aesthetic awareness. It offers children the opportunity to learn about other designers, artists and crafts people and to gain an understanding and appreciation of methods and motives of people from contemporary life, other cultures and different times.Visiting artists and craftspeople are invited into school to share their knowledge with the children and a variety of trips are arranged to support the curriculum. Embroidery Club is offered in both the Junior and Infant departments, which is attended by boys and girls. Year Six children willingly assist the younger children in their club. At Lady Barn examples of children’s work can be found everywhere around the school.
