“To have another language is to possess a second soul.”
Charlemagne, King of France, (AD 742-814)
Our aim in teaching languages is to develop children’s natural fascination and facility with learning languages. Our provision is purposely broad and ambitious, starting in Reception and continuing through the school to Year 6.
Languages are an essential part of the curriculum at Lady Barn House School. Our last inspection commented that “the development of language skill is a particular strength of the school. Pupils are introduced to a wide variety of languages and they are keen to learn, showing a high level of understanding and a willingness to speak”.
We have specialist teachers of French, Spanish, German and Mandarin and a dedicated teaching space for MFL.
Pupils at Lady Barn learn Spanish in Reception, followed by three years of Mandarin in Years 1, 2 and 3. An accelerated course in French is then taught in Years 4, 5 and 6.
Following the Year Six French Trip in March, the children return to school to learn conversational Spanish for their final term.
Year Six French trip
Year Six pupils look forward to an annual trip to the Pas de Calais region in France. They visit various places of historical, cultural and geographical interest and have ample opportunity to practise their French conversational skills.
During their time at Lady Barn there is the opportunity to try other modern foreign and classical languages, with clubs in Spanish, Latin and German. Children may also attend Mandarin Club to continue their language skills after Year 3.
