This term, Art has been filled with exploration, creativity and growing confidence as children across Prep 1 to 6 developed their artistic skills and understanding. Each year group has been engaging with carefully-sequenced projects designed to strengthen technique, encourage curiosity and connect with wider curriculum learning.
In Prep 1, children have been looking at patterns from around the world. Through drawing, colouring and simple mark-making activities, they have been developing their fine motor skills and discovering how patterns can tell stories about different cultures. Their enthusiasm for exploring new shapes and colours demonstrates wonderful creativity, as well as resilience as they practise and refine their control with various tools.
Prep 2 have been captivated by the myths and storytelling behind the famous willow pattern. After learning about the legend depicted on the traditional plate design, the children created their own beautifully decorated paper plates. This project encouraged thoughtful design choices and supported their understanding of how art can communicate narrative. It has also nurtured respect, as pupils reflected on cultural traditions and celebrated one another’s interpretations.
The focus in Prep 3 has been on the formal elements of art and design, line, colour, texture and shape. Through hands-on experimentation, the children are now confident young artists, capable of mixing their own paint shades and working more independently. Their ability to make considered artistic decisions shows strong resilience and growing pride in their developing skills.
Prep 4 have travelled back in time, to explore the history of illuminated letters. Inspired by historic manuscripts, they designed their own highly detailed initials, learning how lettering and illustration were once combined to create decorative and meaningful texts. This has strengthened both technical drawing skills and an appreciation of artistic traditions, reflecting our value of community as pupils connect with art from the past.
In Prep 5, the focus has been on portraiture and three-dimensional art. Children have been studying facial proportions while also developing paper-mâché techniques to create expressive 3D forms. These projects support observational skills and perseverance, with many pupils showing impressive teamwork as they assist and encourage one another through the paper-mâché process.
Prep 6 have been studying the contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and her distinctive use of pattern and scale. Inspired by her work, each child created a giant sculptural mushroom, embracing bold design choices and learning how contemporary art can challenge our perceptions. Their imaginative outcomes reflect exceptional creativity and confidence.
