Love is in the Nursery air…….

This week marks Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Week across schools in the UK. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we have been exploring this year’s theme, “This Is My Place”, and what it truly means to feel a sense of belonging.
Children learn, grow and thrive best when they feel safe, valued and celebrated. When they know they matter and are needed, they become more settled, confident and content. At Lady Barn, we often say that we are one big family, and this week has provided a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what that really means.
Throughout the week, we have shared stories and talked about what it means to feel loved and appreciated. In one story, we met a fisherman who cares deeply for his fish, an actor who enjoys the warmth of applause, and a poet who treasures language. These examples helped the children think about how love, encouragement and appreciation help us feel secure and confident.
We also spoke about how, at the end of each school day, children return home to the love of their families, and how each morning they come back to school to feel the care and support of their teachers and friends. Belonging exists in both places — at home and at school — and it is something we nurture every day.
With the week coinciding with Valentine’s Day, there has certainly been lots of love in the air. The children have enjoyed showing their appreciation for those they care about by creating Valentine’s cards and preparing them to be sent through the post. To make the experience even more special, we visited Cheadle Village Post Office to post the cards ourselves.
This trip was a gentle introduction to class adventures beyond the school gates. The excitement of leaving school and travelling on the minibus — even for just three minutes — was almost too much to contain! Only a three-year-old could find such joy in a postal queue. Each child carefully chose a stamp, placed it on their envelope and posted their card with great pride. Our friendly postman, Tom, showed us inside the letterbox and patiently answered the children’s many thoughtful questions, helping them understand how their cards would begin their journey.
So, if you open your post this week and find not a bill but a beautifully handmade Valentine’s card, remember this: you hold a very special place in a little person’s heart. You belong. You are needed. You matter. And you are celebrated in the most heartfelt way possible.
