News ‐ 13th May

Our horticultural skills have developed significantly in Science recently, due to the purchase of some large raised beds. This has enabled the Plants topic to come alive in new ways to multiple year groups.

Prep 2 have planted a wide range of plants including cauliflower, daffodils, beetroot, sweet peas and marigolds. We have even been gifted some Jersey Royal seed potatoes by Miss LeFeuvre! The children are having fun nurturing these, and take great care to water them regularly in this hot weather.

In Prep 4, the children have been investigating magnets and collating their results scientifically. Prep 5 have been studying the growth of new plants via different methods, including bulbs and tubers. They have also enjoyed visiting the beds and considering the various types of reproduction in plants.

Prep 5 have enjoyed further outdoor learning opportunities as part of their Forces topic, where they have investigated air resistance using parachutes.

As they prepare for their transition to senior schools, Prep 6 have returned to the microscopes, to develop their practical skills. This work is ongoing as part of their work on classification and I have been really impressed with their increasing independence and competence in this area.

Looking ahead to half term, I would like to encourage your children to consider participating in the Science Challenge. Full details have been emailed out and are also on Showbie. Previous years have been a great success, and I am always amazed by the creativity shown by the children. The model display will take place in the science laboratory after school on Friday 6 June, I do hope you will be able to come!
