Prep 2 has been buzzing with excitement as the children have delved into the fascinating lives of famous people from the past. This term, the children have explored the remarkable contributions and challenges faced by individuals who have shaped history, helping them understand how these figures continue to impact the world today. The children have been curious, creative and full of energy as they learned about heroes, innovators and even a few troublemakers!
Our journey began with Florence Nightingale, whose pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War set new standards for healthcare. The children were fascinated to learn how her dedication saved countless lives back then, and continues to influence hospitals even today. Alongside her, they explored the story of Mary Seacole, who faced prejudice and challenges, yet bravely cared for soldiers. Pupils discussed her courage and resilience, learning that determination and kindness can make a real difference.
Not all historical figures were straightforward heroes. The children examined Guy Fawkes and reflected on how his actions had serious consequences, showing that history can be full of tough lessons. On a brighter note, they studied George Stephenson, the 'Father of Railways', and explored how his invention transformed travel and industry. Lively debates about people’s differing opinions on the railway brought history to life, helping children understand different perspectives from the past.
The children were also inspired by Louis Braille, who lost his sight as a young boy but invented the Braille system, allowing blind people to read and write using raised dots. Prep 2 had the exciting chance to try writing in Braille themselves, experiencing first hand how this brilliant invention opens doors to learning and communication for millions of people.
Courage in the skies was brought to life in our drama sessions with Ms Brookes-Ward where the children re-enacted Amy Johnson’s aviation achievements in drama sessions, stepping into the role of a pioneering pilot.
Throughout the topic, Prep 2 explored timelines, sequencing, and the contributions of each figure. They expressed their learning creatively through diary entries, newspaper articles, wanted posters, and story sequencing, showing excellent recall of fascinating facts.
A highlight of the term was 2L’s class assembly, featuring a rhyming poem all about people from the past. The children performed with energy and confidence, impressing parents and peers alike. Families have reported that children are talking excitedly about what they have learned, sharing stories and facts at home.
Prep 2’s journey through history has sparked curiosity, creativity, and thoughtful discussion. Their enthusiasm and engagement have made this topic a truly memorable and inspiring learning experience for everyone!
