Prep 1 discover London
Back
This term, Prep 1 has continued their fantastic start from the autumn by focusing on English and Humanities, with a special theme on London and its history, including the Great Fire of London.
One of our class stories was ‘Katie in London,’ which introduced children to many of the city’s famous landmarks. The children produced beautifully presented work, including group projects where they designed their own maps of London, drew and labelled landmarks, and practised using capital letters for proper nouns. We also watched videos about London to help us make notes and write our own facts. A highlight was receiving a postcard from “Katie” herself, asking us to reply and tell her what we can see from our school in Cheadle. The children’s handwriting and thoughtful responses were truly impressive.
We then travelled back in time to London in 1666 to learn about the Great Fire, using the story of Vlad and Boxton - a flea and a rat, who experienced the fire. We explored what life was like for people during this dramatic event. As part of our enquiry, we created a 'Burning Questions' poster to guide our investigations through English and Humanities.
In mid-November, Prep 1 received a very special visitor: none other than Samuel Pepys himself! Since we had been learning about him, the children were thrilled to meet him in person and ask him questions. Some pupils even dressed up as people from the 17th century, both rich and poor, and everyone enjoyed learning a traditional dance from the time.
Our topic on London has been a thoroughly enjoyable journey. Many children have even visited London with their families at weekends or during the holidays, proudly sharing what they have learned and pointing out landmarks to their parents.
We have received so many positive comments from families about how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been. It has been wonderful to see how studying London has inspired brilliant work and a deep curiosity about this remarkable city.
