Reception Embracing Mathematics Through Active and Fun Learning
BackThis term, our Reception children have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the updated Mathematics curriculum, which has placed an increased emphasis on active and practical learning experiences, with plenty of challenge and problem solving embedded throughout. The revised approach encourages children to explore mathematical ideas through play and real-life contexts, helping them to develop confidence, curiosity and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject.
A wide range of practical games and activities has enriched their learning. Through activities such as sorting, matching, pattern-making, and real-life number tasks, such as playing shop and measuring, the children have been encouraged to explore concepts at depth, collaborate with their peers, and explain their reasoning. These experiences foster not only mathematical fluency but also key social and communication skills.
Songs, rhymes, and stories have also played an important role in supporting children’s mathematical development. Familiar counting songs and number rhymes have helped the children to internalise number sequences and patterns, while stories featuring mathematical concepts have provided engaging and imaginative opportunities for discussion and reasoning. Through these experiences, children are learning that mathematics is something that connects naturally with the world around them.
It has been particularly pleasing to observe the children applying their knowledge to mathematical puzzles and challenges, demonstrating growing confidence with early reasoning and problem-solving skills. They are beginning to approach problems logically, consider alternative solutions and articulate their thought processes with increasing independence.
The Reception team is delighted with the enthusiasm and progress shown by the children. By ensuring that learning is engaging, practical and connected to real life, we are laying the foundations for a deep understanding of maths and a positive attitude towards the subject, that will support their learning in the years ahead.
