Over these last two weeks of the Spring Term, our Prep 6 pupils have embarked on a fantastic adventure to France, returning full of stories, new experiences and an impressive boost to their confidence. From beginning to end, both trips were filled with discovery, laughter, and opportunities to put their French skills into practice.

The children spent time exploring the traditional market in Etaples-sur-Mer, where they wandered among stalls, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and interacting with locals. Several children made small purchases on their own, putting their confidence and vocabulary to the test.

The small boulangeries and café in nearby Le Touquet offered more opportunities to flex their linguistic skills, ordering sandwiches and drinks. It was wonderful to see them stepping forward with “Bonjour, Monsieur/Madame”, “Je voudrais…s’il vous plaît” and “Merci, au revoir!” - communicating cheerfully, politely and clearly with shopkeepers and servers. Many pupils commented on how proud they felt speaking French in real contexts and being understood - and how delicious French hot chocolate is!

Another enjoyable visit was to a chocolate factory, where the group learned about the process of chocolate‑making from cocoa bean to finished treat. The children were captivated by the demonstrations and, unsurprisingly, the tasting session was a firm favourite.

There were also important moments of reflection and learning. During their visit to Etaples Military Cemetery, the children all behaved with great maturity and respect. They listened carefully as they learned about the history of the site and took time to consider the experiences of the soldiers commemorated there. The visit to the Museum of the Battle of Agincourt added further depth to the week, offering the children opportunities to explore this key point in military history and then to try their hand at real archery!

The excitement continued at Nausicaá, Europe’s largest aquarium, where the children discovered an array of beautiful marine animals. From shimmering shoals of fish, to impressive sharks, they were completely absorbed. The tour was rounded off with a workshop led by one of the aquarium’s engaging teachers, who just may have inspired one or two future marine biologists!

Early evenings before dinner time will perhaps be the standout memory for many. Time was spent freely exploring the beautiful Hardelot Centre - playing in the woods, the sports area and the games room with friends. Throughout their time in France, the children on both trips showed enthusiasm, positivity, teamwork and kindness; they were a real credit to themselves, and to Lady Barn.

We are incredibly proud of our Prep 6 pupils for embracing every moment of this enriching trip. Bravo to them all for making it such a successful and memorable adventure!
