Idris (3R) recently took part in a HYROX event — a global fitness race that combines running with a series of functional workout stations designed to test strength, endurance, and overall fitness. The format challenges participants to move through a sequence of varied physical tasks, making it both demanding and exciting.

For Idris’ age group (8–9/10–11), the event included a range of stations such as:

  • SkiErg: 200m–400m on the SkiErg machine
  • Sled Push: 15m push (35kg–45kg including sled)
  • Sled Pull (Stepback): 15m pull (25kg–40kg)
  • Frogger Jumps (8–9) or Burpee Broad Jumps (10–11): 20m–25m
  • Rowing: 200m–300m on the rowing machine
  • Farmers Carry: 50m carry (4kg–6kg kettlebells or bags)
  • Obstacle Shuttle Run: 250m–300m navigating obstacles
  • Wall Balls: 50 repetitions using a 1kg–2kg ball

Idris found the event both challenging and enjoyable, particularly appreciating the variety of activities involved. The competition pushed him out of his comfort zone, especially when it came to maintaining his stamina throughout, but he showed great determination and resilience to complete every stage.

Interestingly, Idris did not follow a specific HYROX training programme before the event. Instead, he has consistently taken part in a wide range of sports, including swimming, running, martial arts, and playing for two football teams. This combination of activities helped him develop the strength, endurance, and fitness needed to take part successfully, even without targeted preparation.

During the event, Idris realised that he had never previously used either the SkiErg or the rowing machine, which made his achievement even more impressive. Despite this, he approached every challenge with a positive attitude and gave his very best effort throughout, demonstrating one of Lady Barn’s core values: resilience.

In the lead-up to the event, Idris trained consistently within his usual routines and showed real commitment. It was wonderful to see his confidence grow as he prepared, and one of the highlights for his family was his dedication and positive attitude, even when things felt tough.

Alongside his impressive sporting achievement, Idris also created an amazing fundraising campaign for the charity Bliss, which supports premature and sick babies. This cause is especially meaningful to Idris and his family, as his little sister, Alayna, was born at 26 weeks during lockdown and spent time in neonatal intensive care.

Through his efforts, Idris raised an incredible £1,000 to support other families going through similar experiences, making both his family and the whole school community extremely proud.

Idris is already keen to book his next HYROX event, which says everything about how much he gained from the experience. Lady Barn wishes him every success in his future sporting and charitable achievements.
