Our Reception children enjoyed a truly memorable visit from Zoo Lab this term, taking part in a hands-on workshop all about some of the world’s more unusual creatures. The session gave the children a wonderful opportunity to see and learn about a variety of minibeasts and animals up close, sparking lots of curiosity and excitement.

One of the highlights was meeting Sheldon the African snail, who is three years old. The children were fascinated to learn that, although he has no bones, he has lots of tiny teeth and comes from the tropical rainforest. Many of the children described him as “heavy” and “slimy” after having a closer look! They also met Millie the Madagascan hissing cockroach, whose colourful body and sticky legs captured everyone’s attention. 

Another favourite was the corn snake, and the children were particularly interested to learn that it eats one mouse each week! Alongside these creatures, the children also met others such as a scorpion and a Ghanaian olive millipede, listening carefully to the Zoo Lab leader as they shared interesting facts.

Throughout the workshop, the children showed great bravery and enthusiasm. They asked thoughtful questions, listened well and were eager to share what they had learned with their friends afterwards. It was a fantastic experience that inspired a real sense of awe and wonder about the natural world!
