Lady Barn House School is proud to have achieved Eco-Schools Green Flag Recognition for the 2026/27 academic year. Pupils at Lady Barn have demonstrated outstanding leadership in championing sustainability and inspiring meaningful environmental action across their school and wider community. Their passion, creativity, and commitment to creating positive environmental impact has been recognised with Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, which celebrates excellence in environmental education and pupil-led action.

Established in 1994, the Eco-Schools programme has spent more than 30 years inspiring and empowering young people to become environmental leaders. Today, Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation is awarded in more than 100 countries, reflecting the programme’s global impact. In England alone, it reaches over one million young people each year, supporting them to take meaningful action and drive positive change for our planet.

Mrs Beer, Deputy Head - Teaching & Learning, said: "Achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award is a proud moment for our whole school. Our children have learned that caring for the environment starts with the choices we make every day. When pupils understand how their everyday choices affect the world around them, from saving energy and reducing waste to protecting wildlife in our school grounds, they grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens. What has impressed me most is how our Eco-Council and classes have worked together to find practical solutions. They have investigated problems, shared ideas, listened to one another and turned their plans into real change across the school. These are skills that will serve them well throughout their lives and our children have shown that, by working together, our community can make a lasting difference to our planet."

Our 2026/27 Eco-Council Celebrating the Green Flag Award

At Lady Barn House School, our pupil-led Eco-Council, supported by our Eco Co-ordinator Mr Jones (Prep 1 Form Teacher and Woodland School Teacher), used the Eco-Schools seven-step framework to drive improvements in their school’s sustainability. They began by carrying out a thorough environmental review of their school grounds, buildings, and curriculum. Using their findings, the committee then collaborated to create a detailed, year-long action plan designed to deliver meaningful, measurable change.

Their Action Plan focused on three key areas: Water, Waste and Community links. To address these priorities, the Eco-Committee led a series of impactful initiatives, including auditing the entire school on the use of single use plastic water bottles (in which we did very well!), continuing to collect waste food from classrooms and the dining area to compost and a trip to our local residential home to help upcycle plant pots and plant new flowers. Each activity was designed not only to improve their school’s environmental performance but also to inspire the wider school community to adopt more sustainable everyday behaviours.

Speaking about their achievements, Mr Jones said, “It's always a pleasure to enable our pupils on the Eco Council to make a real difference to our aims of becoming a more environmentally friendly school and community. They have really enjoyed the challenge and are looking forward to the coming year to help make a difference again!”

And pupil, Aairah, age 9, said that "I am proud that our School is so eco-friendly because it helps the world."

Our Pre-School pupils explore the natural world through Woodland School, developing environmental awareness and a love of nature from the very start.

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: "Young people want to create meaningful change, and they have shown they are more than capable of doing so. Their efforts deserve recognition and should act as inspiration to us all. Our planet is already feeling the effects of climate change, pollution and waste, but young people across England have shown we do not have to accept this, a more sustainable future is possible.”
