Little Learners, Big Measurements in Prep 1
Back
The children have been exploring measurement in fun and practical ways. They started by using non-standard units such as cubes, paper clips, and even their own hand spans. This hands-on approach helps them understand size and length in a way that feels real and engaging. It also encourages a sense of community, as the children often work together, share resources, and talk about what they are discovering.
Teamwork has been a big part of these activities. The children enjoy working in pairs or small groups, for example, one child might line up the cubes while another counts them. This helps them practise working together, taking turns, and supporting each other.
There has also been lots of creativity in their learning. Many children have produced their own ways of measuring, like using footsteps or different classroom objects. This keeps them interested and helps them explore their ideas more freely.
Respect is shown in the way the children listen to each other, share equipment, and value different answers. They are learning that it’s okay if results vary, especially when using non-standard ways of measuring, and that everyone’s contribution matters.
Resilience is developing as the children face small challenges along the way. Measuring isn’t always easy, and sometimes things don’t line up perfectly. The children are encouraged to keep trying, make adjustments, and feel proud of their efforts.
As their confidence grows, they are beginning to use standard tools like rulers, while also utilising their ICT skills and helping them understand the importance of accuracy.
Overall, it has been lovely to see the children enjoying their learning while also growing in confidence and developing these important life skills.
