A residential trip to the Lake District is so much more than just a few days away from school—it’s an exciting adventure full of discoveries, opportunities, and plenty of moments of success that children will remember for years to come. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes, and fresh air, it’s the perfect place for pupils to explore, have fun, and try something new. Staying at the delightful Glaramara Hotel in Borrowdale made the experience even more special, giving everyone a warm and welcoming base to relax after busy days outdoors.

One of the best things about a residential is the sense of discovery. Being somewhere completely different encourages children to be curious about the world around them. A hill walk isn’t just about getting from one place to another—it’s about taking in incredible views, noticing nature, and feeling proud when they reach the top. Orienteering adds even more excitement, as children work out how to read maps and find their way, often surprising themselves with how quickly they improve.

There are also so many opportunities to get stuck into new and adventurous activities. For many children, this might be their first time trying rock climbing or ghyll scrambling. Climbing a rock face can feel a bit daunting at first, but the sense of achievement at the top is amazing. Ghyll scrambling, with its splashing streams and slippery rocks, is always a favourite—it’s wet, wild, and full of laughter. Team games that focus on practical problem solving give children the chance to work together, share ideas, and figure things out as a group, building strong teamwork skills along the way.

Throughout the trip, there are lots of chances for children to experience success. This might be reaching the top of a hill, completing an orienteering challenge, or working together to solve a tricky problem. These moments really help build confidence and show children what they’re capable of.

Just as important are the friendships that grow stronger during a residential. Evenings back at the hotel are filled with chatter, laughter, and shared stories from the day’s adventures, helping everyone to bond and feel part of a team.
